Om Prakash Munjal, an Indian businessman and the founder of Hero Cycles. The Punjab-based company as the world’s largest bicycle manufacturer entered the Guinness Book of World Records. He left school at the age of 16 and began his business career. He was known as the father of cycle industries.
Early Life
Om Prakash Munjal was born in Kamalia on 26th August 1928. He and his family moved to Amritsar in1944. He and his brothers started a bicycle spare parts business but soon it got affected by the Partition of India. They moved their base to Ludhiana. In 1956 from bicycle spare parts manufacturing they moved to complete bicycle manufacturing keeping the brand name as Hero. They made 639 bicycles in the first year. It became the first bicycle manufacturing unit in India.
Career
Munjal started manufacturing bicycles by taking a bank loan of 50,000. It soon started growing and the rising popularity attracted skilled workers and engineers. They helped in building up an ancillary industry around the industry of bicycle. In 1980 it became the largest bicycle manufacturer company. Today, Hero Cycles produces almost 19000 bicycles per year. They expanded the company and built up sectors like components of bicycle, automotive, components of automotive, IT, services etc. Munjal’s brother Brijmohan and the next generation of their family started Hero Honda. Honda was for manufacturing motorcycles which went on to become the largest motorcycle manufacturing unit in India. Munjal was the first to come with the idea of electric bicycles in India.
Personal Life
Munjal was married to Sudarshan Munjal and they have five kids namely Neeru Khanna, Neeta Seth, Poonam Soni, Priyanka Malhotra and Pankaj Munjal. Apart from brilliant business sense he also had a knack for poetry, cultural
